Apple Roller Of the Year, 2022
WAS THERE ANY OTHER REAL CHOICE THIS YEAR?
The current line-up of the justices of the U.S. Supreme Court has been rocking the country to its foundations with every new decision, NOT LEAST the overturning of Roe vs. Wade, which sent every American scrambling to, I don't know, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. In the time since, 13 states have leaped on the chance to outlaw all abortion access COMPLETELY, and many others have scrambled to pass new laws enshrining the right to abortion in their constitutions. If the stakes hadn't been so high it would have been FUNNY to see billboards go up all over my own state concerning Proposition 3, which would (if voted in) have taken Michigan back to the days when Roe was still in force. This is the one I saw the most often:
This made me look up the wording of the ballot and yes, a little of it did seem kind of vague. The rest of it was not extreme at all, but exactly what I've been used to all the years I've been aware of the abortion issue. Others were far more entertaining, believe me. Take a gander at this one:
And here's its fraternal twin:
For the record, your honor, PROP 3 DIDN'T MENTION EITHER ISSUE. But that's what opponents saw in the wording, as if voting it in would allow 7-year-old kids to start getting vasectomies and sex-change operations in secret.
If you're not in Michigan: Prop 3 won handily.
AND THEN THERE'S THESE TWO.
SCOTUS Justice Clarence Thomas and his lovely bride, Ginni, are now up to their eyeballs in the January 6th debacle. Ginni was not actually part of the mob that attacked the Capitol Building on January 6th but she was actively encouraging every blame fool idea they were acting on, airing her views on social media before, during and after the insurrection. Now she is under considerable pressure to EXPLAIN herself, and it's hard to believe that her life partner and best friend DOESN'T KNOW A THING ABOUT IT. To me, the funniest part of this scandal is the fact that one of the agenda items of the far right at the moment is the overturning of Loving vs. Virginia, the SCOTUS decision that made it possible for any (heterosexual) American to marry any other, regardless of race or ethnic background. If these people succeed in their plans, their marriage may suddenly be NULL AND VOID.
And meanwhile, there's Brett Kavanaugh.
This guy has been QUITE A DISAPPOINTMENT to right-wing types, doing his best to FOLLOW THE LAW as ANY JUDGE ought to. He hasn't been that wing-nutty at all. As someone who delighted in his weepy histrionics during his confirmation hearings and was QUITE MIFFED to hear later about the TENS OF THOUSANDS OF TIPS CALLED IN ON THE GUY'S BAD ACTS THAT NOBODY PAID ANY ATTENTION TO as Christine Blasey Ford was testifying against him...well, I'm mildly satisfied with him so far.
I still miss the Notorious R.B.G., but things are staying QUITE INTERESTING. I look forward to more apples from theis crew.
